VICTORY FOR ONGAR PETANQUE
Ongar Pétanque ended their 2026 Match season in style !! Starting the 2nd Leg of our Annual Challenge Match against the Epping Horizons team, with a deficit of 3 wins carried forward from the 1st Leg match played at Epping in June, Ongar players needed to produce their best form at Ongar last weekend. This Local Derby originated in 2012 and has become one of the highlights of our Pétanque Calendar, renewing friendships with Epping players each year, and bringing both social and competitive spirit to a fabulous day for both clubs’ passionate and experienced pétanque players.
This year was no exception, playing 4 rounds of Mixed Triples, brought some fine games and definitely one of the tightest matches played between these 2 local clubs. After 3 Rounds, Ongar had managed to draw even, despite starting 6 ½ – 9 ½ down – it was now 14 matches a-piece ! So all to play for, as the players start the final round – once again Ongar pulled out all the stops winning 3 of the 4 final games ending with a Grand Total – Ongar 17 matches to Epping 15 overall – making Ongar 2026 Champions and retaining the Robert Weston Memorial trophy for another year.
The previous weekend had brought over 30 of our Ongar playing members together for our Club Competition Finals Day. Played in glorious weather and with a delicious buffet at the Ongar Club Pistes following the Challenge Trophy Prize Presentation, made another enjoyable day for everyone.
